Origins of Yoga


The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Yuj' which means to ‘join’ or ‘unite’.

The word ‘Yoga’ can be traced inthe Rig Veda, the oldest of these scriptures.

Yoga is an ancient practice,which acts as a cure for physical as well as mental disorders since ages. This practice 1st started in India and Lord Adiyogi Shiva is considered to be its pioneer. Later on our great Indian masters kept the lineages of traditional yoga alive and passed it to their students and the rest of the world. 

Gurus of Yoga

  1. TirumalaiKrishnamacharya

Infamous as the father of modern yoga T. Krishnamacharya was a prominent ayurvedic scholar, yoga teacher, and healer who revived the traditional art of hatha yoga.

  1. Swami SivanandaSaraswati

Born in Tamil Nadu SivanandaSaraswati is prominently known for combining karma yoga, bhakti yoga, jnana yoga, and raja yoga. At the age of 40,SivanandaSaraswati came to Rishikesh in the search of self-realization with the rigorous practice of yoga and meditation.

 

  1. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

Maharshi Mahesh yogi was born on 12 January 1918 and is famous for developing a deeper form of meditation that is known as the transcendental meditation technique. It is a type of mantra meditation that produces a deeper state of relaxation and promotes a sense of spirituality. 

 

  1. B.K.S Iyengar

BKS Iyengar or BellurKrishnamacharyaSundararajaIyengar was the founder of the famous Iyengar Yoga. He started on the path of yoga after suffering from various diseases throughout his childhood that made him very weak.

 

  1. Swami Kavalayananda

Swami Kuvalayananda was born on 30 August 1883 was a prominent researcher and yoga teacher, known for his research work on yoga and its practices. He started working on yoga Mimansawhich was his first scientific journal.
