Transformation of Vachanas
वचनम् (Number)
By which the number of a substance can be understood, is called ‘Vachan’. [वचनम्]
There are three numbers in the Sanskrit language - singular, dual, and plural.
1. एकवचनम्– Denotes one
2. द्विवचनम्– Denotes two
3. बहुवचनम्– Denotes more than two
The sense of one, that is, the sense of a number, is called singular.
Examples
अश्वः - (पुल्लिंग)
बालिका - (स्त्रीलिंग)
फलम्- (नपुंसकलिंग)
By which there is a sense of two, that is, there is a sense of two quantitative numbers, it is called dual.
Examples
अश्वौ: - (पुल्लिंग)
बालिके- (स्त्रीलिंग)
फले- (नपुंसकलिंग)
The meaning of more than two is called plural.
Examples
अश्वा:- (पुल्लिंग)
बालिकाः - (स्त्रीलिंग)
फलानि - (नपुंसकलिंग)
